Spring baseball is in full swing now!
Mitchell is on the Nationals this year. He has a great team of coaches and I'm excited about the season.
Warning...mommy bragging ahead.
When I got the call from his coach that he would be on the Nationals, the coach told me that Mitchell was his 1st round pick. Since Mitchell
didn't make select baseball, this made me feel really good.
Mitchell tried pitching in the fall but didn't stick with it. His coaches convinced him to try again and he's doing great! He's more confident now and he enjoys it more.
Their first game was on March 16th. The weather was perfect for baseball. He was the relief/closing pitcher. He did really well and didn't hit anyone. On the flip side, Mitchell got hit pretty hard in his side when he was up to bat. He had one strike out and one walk prior to that. He had 2 outs at 1st base.
His second game was during the week on Tuesday night. We were playing the Mets. Mitchell was the starting pitcher. He pitched for 2 1/2 innings and threw 57 pitches. (The max is 60 pitches/game.) He struck out 8 batters and hit only one. I was extremely proud of how he did.
The game was really close and we went into the bottom of the 5th inning down 2-3. With 2 runners on base, Mitchell was up to bat. We had 2 outs at this point. I was very nervous for him because he had struck out at his 2 previous at bats. I wasn't sure how he would do this time. He fouled off one and then he had 2 strikes. The head coach sent one of the assistant coaches out to talk to him because they could tell he was nervous. Who wouldn't be?! The game was resting on his shoulders at this point. One of his former teammates, Noah, came over from another field and started cheering him on. He was so confident that Mitchell would hit a home run. I could see the determination on his face. He wanted this so badly. Whatever his coach said to him worked...Mitchell hit a line drive out to right field and he got a triple. This allowed the 2 kids on base to score and we won the game 4-3.
Mitchell was awarded the game ball and he couldn't wait to call Dave to tell him about the exciting ending to his baseball game!
