Mitchell had his 4-year-old checkup this morning. He did great! The doctor proclaimed him “perfect”. He weighs 43 lbs (91st percentile) and is 41.3 inches tall (65th percentile). He’s gained 5 lbs since last year and grew from 38” last year to 41.3” this year. I think he had a growth spurt recently because some of his 4T pants are getting a little short on him now.
She asked him all kinds of questions – about his teachers, his friends at school (Jacob and Reese), the playground at school (there are no monkey bars), what he eats (no vegetables, but yes to chicken, applesauce and ice cream!) and whether he rides a bike and wears a helmet. She asked him why he should wear a helmet. She prompted him by pointing to his head and asking him what is inside that he needs to protect and he said hair.
He told her that he was 4 (thank goodness he stopped saying that he was going to be 8). She asked him if he had any baby brothers or sisters at home and he said no. He answered every single question she asked him with (almost) the right answer. We’ll have to work on the fact that he thinks his helmet is protecting his hair. If he was anything like his Mommy, he would know that the helmet actually messes up his hair!
He pretty much refused to do the vision screening. He was supposed to look through the “binoculars” and tell the nurse which pictures he saw. But he was being shy and didn’t want to tell her. So they said we could wait until he’s 5 to do that test. They didn’t even attempt to test his hearing.
He wasn’t too excited about getting shots. The nurse was so quick though and she was done before he could even cry. He just rubbed his leg afterwards and said it hurt.
On a side note, we had his speech tested at school a few weeks ago and they said that he’s well within normal for his age. So that was good to hear!
One of his favorite things right now is answering the phone and talking on the phone. Aunt Kerri was impressed when he answered the phone and after hearing her voice said, “Hi, Aunt Kerri!” Although one time when Granddad called and tried to disguise his voice, Mitchell was convinced that he was talking to Uncle Bob. We all got a kick out of that. It doesn’t matter who is on the phone…he doesn’t care if he knows the person or not…he wants to talk on the phone when it rings!
His other favorite things (directly from the source) are: trucks, firetrucks, buses, cars and trucks. Lately, he’s also been pretty fascinated with trains. Dave has an instructional video that goes with his train set and that is one of his favorite things to watch now! He also likes the train catalog that has all of the different types of engines and cars in it. He “reads” it before going to bed each night.
He still likes to copy what we say. I normally ask him in the morning if he slept good so now he's taken to asking me, "Mommy, how was your nap?" He also asked me, "How was your day?" the other day. That is one of the questions I always ask him when he gets home from school. If he does something for you (like color a picture) and you don't say "thank you", he'll remind you by saying, "Say thank you." And if he asks you a yes or a no question and you respond with, "Yeah", he'll say, "Say yes."
