We took a last minute trip to Jekyll Island for July 4th. We normally stay in town for the 4th, but this year we decided that we wanted to head to the beach.
We left on Thursday morning and came back on Sunday. We had a great time. Dave and I hadn’t been to Jekyll Island since our “babymoon”…the September before Mitchell was born in November. So it was fun to go back and take him with us this time. The island hasn’t changed much at all. That is the nice thing about Jekyll….it’s not commercialized and it’s not overgrown with restaurants, Wings stores and fast food restaurants. It’s very laid back and small.
When we checked into our room, one of the first things that Mitchell noticed was the huge Jacuzzi tub in our hotel room. He couldn’t wait to take a bath in it! I’ve never seen him so excited about taking a bath.
After eating dinner, we headed to the pool for a little while. Mitchell and Dave had fun cooling off in the pool while I sat nearby in the shade just taking it easy. Of course when we got back to the room, Mitchell had to get into the Jacuzzi tub! (His first bath of many that weekend!)
Part of the package we got included breakfast. So the next morning we headed to the restaurant attached to the hotel for breakfast. All Mitchell wanted was “chocolate” muffins, fruit and chocolate milk. His taste buds must be off because what he thought was chocolate was really bran. I took a bite and it was about as far from chocolate as you can get! But he loved them. Meanwhile Dave and I enjoyed scrambled eggs, grits, bacon and biscuits while Mitchell ate healthy with his bran muffin and cantaloupe!
On Friday, we decided to leave the island to see what was in the nearby town of Brunswick. The answer to that would be “not much”. Although we did get to drive over a huge bridge to get there. Mitchell fell asleep so he missed most of that. We decided to drive to St. Simon’s Island since it was 8 miles from Brunswick and we had never been there before. It was much more crowded than Jekyll Island so we decided to head back to Brunswick to try to find somewhere to eat dinner. I was very hungry at this point and didn’t want fast food, but that was about all that we were seeing! Finally, we turned down this street and stumbled upon a brand new shopping center with a Longhorn’s and a Target! We hit the jackpot.
On the way back to Jekyll, we drove past a huge field where they keep all of the school buses over the summer. I think that was the highlight of the trip for Mitchell! When we got back to our hotel room, he wanted to call Grandmother and Granddad and he told them that he saw 100 school buses…they probably didn’t realize that he wasn’t exaggerating.
Dave and Mitchell tried to head outside to see the big fireworks show, but there were some people shooting off fireworks on the hotel grounds and they weren’t being very smart about where they were aiming and they almost hit people on the beach several times. So they headed back in to watch the fireworks from our balcony.
On Saturday we headed to the more historic part of the island and Mitchell rode his bike around the paths there. We got some ice cream (2 previous places we tried had no chocolate!). But we finally found a place that had chocolate ice cream. We walked around the Jekyll Island Club Hotel (http://www.jekyllclub.com/) This is where I want to stay the next time we go! I don't care that it does not have beach access...it's a beautiful property. While we were walking around there, 2 different couples stopped to ask me to take their pictures in front of a huge tree on the property. I guess I must have looked like a decent photograper because someone else on the beach asked me to take their picture earlier that day!
We spent a lot of time on the beach and by the pool and we just took it easy. It was a great vacation for the 3 of us.
