The Ups and Downs of the First Week of School

This week lasted about a month. I'm exhausted and it's only been 1 week that Mitchell has been in school. I can only hope that it gets easier.

Monday: Met the neighbors outside at 7am and we all walked to school together. Mitchell did great when I walked him to his room. He was a little nervous, but he hung in there and didn't cry. I got a little rattled when the school called that morning. Thank goodness they were only asking where he was supposed to go after school let out.

Tuesday: Loved walking to school so much on Monday that we did it again on Tuesday. When we got to school, Mitchell let Victoria walk him to his classroom. No tears.

Wednesday: Still wanted to walk to school with the neighbors. This is fun! We get to run and play on the way to school. Not so great when we get to school and realize playtime is over. He wouldn't let Victoria walk him to class and he stood in the entryway of the school and cried. I grabbed a visitor tag while Tara signed me in and I walked him to his classroom. Left him crying with his teacher.

Thursday: Dentist appt at 8am. He did great at the dentist. They said he hardly said 2 words the whole time. They took x-rays, did the flouride treatment...complete checkup and everything looked good. I had to walk him to the office to get a tardy slip when we got to school. One of the admins from the office walked him to class. No tears. Yipppeee!

Friday: Doesn't want to go to school. Crying ensues because he wants Daddy to take him to school. I calm him down by giving him "magic juice". (Don't call child services on me --- there wasn't anything in the juice!) At this point, I'm starting to run late for my carpool and I decided to drive him. We parked right outside the school grounds and walked in. There was some apprehension, but no tears. I tried to encourage him to walk to his class, but he wanted to go to the office instead. I think he liked the attention he got when the admin assistant walked him to class on Thursday! Luckily one of the teachers who monitors the hallways saw him and got an older student to come and help him out. So the two of them convinced him to walk to his class. No tears (at least not at school).

On Thursday he did start talking about his "funny friend". I'm not sure if he's in his class or if he's in the afterschool program. He did seem excited to see him on Friday and that is what motivated him to get out of the car. He kept saying he wanted to see his funny friend. I did find out his name is Andrew.

I just hope we don't have to start all over again on Monday! I can't take much more of this emotional roller coaster that comes with dropping him off each day.
