2 down; 30-something more weeks to go

It's late and I'm tired and I can't seem to count the number of weeks left in the school year. I've counted twice and came up with 2 different numbers. But there are more than 30 and less than 40 weeks left until the end of school.

The first 2 weeks have gone well. Mitchell loves his teacher, Mrs. Butler and the assistant, Mrs. Rohas. He loves walking to school or carpooling with the neighbors. We set up a carpool schedule where 4 of us share the responsibility of taking all of the kids to school.

Tara took the kids Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On all of those days, Mitchell only wanted Tara to take him; he didn't want me to go with them. Tara said he did great and wasn't upset at all when they got to school. Her daughter Victoria walked him to his class.

On Thursday, Joan drove. While the other kids were fighting over the front seats, Mitchell hopped into the very back and was so excited to be sitting in the back.

It was my turn on Friday and since I needed to get to work for a meeting, I drove everyone to school. Mitchell was adamant about me staying in the car and not going inside. Isn't he too young for that? Or maybe he's just exerting his independence.

On Friday night, Joan's daughter, Evan, babysat for Mitchell and took him to the Back to School Bash. Mitchell already has some school spirit as he came home with "EJ" (for Esther Jackson) painted on one cheek and jaguar spots on the other cheek. He was so excited and didn't want to wash it off. He wanted to leave it on for school on Monday so he could show Mrs. Butler. I convinced him that it wouldn't last until Monday and we washed off the spots and he slept with EJ on his cheek. But it was gone by the morning.

He hasn't mentioned his old school, so that has helped. He'll go back to Primrose when Esther Jackson is closed for teacher workdays. We'll be in Florida at Disney for his first teacher workday so he won't actually go until Election Day.

Even though we've lived in this neighborhood for 6 years now and know a lot of our neighbors, we feel more a part of our community now that Mitchell goes to our elementary school. I'm really glad that we made the decision to put him in school this year instead of keeping him at Primrose for another year.
