Exactly 5 years ago today, I was in labor with Mitchell. I remember it was around mid-morning when the midwife said he should arrive by noon. Little did we know how stubborn he would be! Noon came and went and there was no sign of Mitchell making his entrance into the world.
It was between 3-4pm when the decision was made to go ahead with a c-section. I welcomed the relief that the epidural provided!
I still remember my shock when I saw him…I couldn’t believe he had a head full of blond hair. Even the anesthesiologist asked if he was Dave’s child.
Dave went with him while he got a bath and was weighed and measured. He weighed in at 8 lbs, 6 oz and was 19 ½ inches long.
His official arrival time was 5:18pm.
We were in recovery for a while waiting for a room. The time flew by for me, but I know Dave was getting a little impatient. I made several phone calls to friends and family members to let them all know that he was here.
Mom and Dad arrived later that evening and were the first to meet Mitchell. Mark and Sarah made the trip the next day to meet their new nephew. I remember that they all went to dinner at Max and Erma's and brought me back a piece of chocolate and banana cream pie. While they were gone, I called my good friend Beth whose son, Chase, was born just a few weeks prior. Mitchell has met Chase twice now and he constantly asks when we'll go to Baltimore again to see him.
The memories of that day are so vivid and it’s hard to believe there has been 5 years in between. We’ve gone from crawling, to standing, to walking, to running to riding a bike without training wheels.
We’ve gone from seeing his first tooth come in to Mitchell pulling it out all by himself when it was loose.

We’ve gone from words like ball, bubble and mama to words like John McCain and Barack Obama.
Some things haven’t changed. I think we knew from the beginning that he would be a sly devil when I took this picture.

He loves to “trick” people and play games. He loves to make people laugh. And he loves to laugh himself.
With one smile he can turn your day around. With one big hug he can make you forget that tears were flowing just a few minutes earlier.
He said to me yesterday: “Mommy, do you know what I’m thankful for?...Trains.” He’s just like his daddy at that age. We’ll have to be sure to tell the anesthesiologist that yes, he’s most definitely Mitchell’s father even though his blond hair makes it seem otherwise.
I love this quote: So there is this boy...he kind of stole my heart...he calls me Mommy.
