The practice wasn't cancelled and it went well. Mitchell quickly made some new friends. His first game was to be on Saturday, March 13th. However, along with unseasonably cold weather, we've also had a lot of rain. The fields had not dried out, so the game was cancelled. However, they did take team and individual pictures at 7:50am on a Saturday on the other side of town from us. Thank goodness we're early risers anyway.
So three weeks into the season, on March 20th, Mitchell finally had his first game! It was a beautiful first day of Spring. It was sunny and in the low 70s. Mitchell's game was at 12:30, so it was nice and warm by then.
Mitchell's team is the San Diego Padres. They played the Blue Jays. I was a little concerned at first because the Blue Jays outnumbered the Padres because all of our players hadn't shown up yet. Thankfully our team filled out and we had enough players.
The rules of the game are...well, there really aren't many rules. Everyone plays, so the field can get a little crowded because they bring the bases in a few feet from regulation. Everyone bats, everyone gets on base and everyone scores. There are no outs and they also don't keep score.
The kids had a blast as the parents just laughed and cheered from the stands. Laughed because many balls were missed, overthrown or had 5 kids going after them at the same time. Some kids weren't sure of the order of the bases and some seem completely amazed that they had hit the ball and they just stood at home plate not sure what to do next.
