It was the 4th day of being homebound because of a snow/ice storm which hit Atlanta in the overnight hours on Sunday, January 9th.
I worked from home Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop and watched people walking up and down Truehedge Trace.
By Thursday afternoon, I was going stir crazy and really wanted to get outside to get some fresh air. I hadn't left the house since Sunday! And Dave and Mitchell had been out every single day since the storm hit, so surely I could go outside as well.
The plan was for Mitchell and me to walk to the used bookstore and then pick up a pizza at Marco's pizza. Both places are located right outside of our neighborhood.
We both got all bundled up and headed out. I didn't even make it past the house right next door to us before I fell on the ice. I instantly felt like crying as I rolled over to my knees, crawled to a spot without ice and got back up on my feet. Meanwhile, Mitchell told me was sorry I had fallen and he rushed home to tell Dave. He also sent my sister a chat message telling her I had fallen. He's good at getting the word out quickly.
Dave walked outside just as I was walking up the steps to come inside. I knew I had done something to my left wrist even though I didn't hear a crack or anything like that. But I felt sick to my stomach and I broke out in a cold sweat. My hand did not swell instantly and we debated about what to do.
Dave called a few urgent care places to find out if they took x-rays. We called a friend to take Mitchell. Thankfully he also offered to watch Macey for us so we would not have to take her out in ice.
By this point, Mitchell wanted to know who was going to take him to the bookstore and to get pizza!
Dave did head out to get pizza since Jeff would be coming over to stay with the kids and we had no food in the house because, guess what, we were heading out of town the very next day! My timing could not have been worse!
We went to urgent care, but they had closed early because of the storm. So we headed to the ER. Meanwhile, a pretty good sized goose egg had developed on my wrist.
We got to the ER and checked in and then waited for our turn to see the triage nurse. The 3 people in front of me all had the same type of wrist injury.
We were finally called back and saw the doctor pretty quickly. He ordered x-rays and a tech came by with a portable machine.
Got the news that my wrist was fractured and they needed to put a splint on my arm. That took a while because I guess there was a shortage of fiberglass because of all of the injuries due to the ice!
She wet the fiberglass and wrapped it around my arm up to my elbow. She wrapped an Ace bandage around it and the fiberglass hardened. I was told not to get it wet and to sleep with my arm elevated.
I think we finally left the ER around 10:30 and got home close to 11:00. I was so relieved that the kids were not with us!
We did leave for Disney the next day as scheduled. It's difficult to type with a cast on my arm, but I will update the blog as soon as I can!
