We met his teacher, Ms. Stephan, at Open House the Thursday before school started on Monday. I had emailed Mitchell's 1st grade teacher to ask about his 2nd grade teacher. I was very pleased to hear that she thinks Mitchell's teacher will be a fantastic fit for him. We met her and thought she was really nice as well. Mitchell was thrilled to find out that several of his friends from last year are in his class.
We didn't follow our usual routine of walking to school with the neighbors. Mitchell wanted to be dropped off in the carpool lane this year. Since I knew he'd be OK and I wouldn't be going in with him anyway, I left for work early and Dave took him to school. It's nice that Dave is home and he can experience some of these milestones! So Dave got to experience Mitchell's 1st day of 2nd grade with him. He reported back that Mitchell was all smiles and very excited for the first day of school.
Of course I had to take the obligatory picture. My camera wasn't working right, so I had to take one with my camera phone. Luckily the first picture turned out good because Mitchell was done after one!
Take note of Mitchell's shoes. We never spend a lot of money on his shoes. We usually buy them at Kohl's...when they are on sale and we have a coupon. But they just never seem to last. We purposely bought him a cheap pair of tennis shoes from Target at the beginning of the summer. He was going to various sports camps and we knew his shoes would get ruined. So we were OK with spending $12 on a pair of shoes just for the summer. But we promised him a new pair of shoes for the beginning of school. He had seen commercials on TV for Reezig (Reebok ZigTech) shoes. They didn't have any in his size, so he settled on the Reebok Flex shoes in lime green. Luckily we had a coupon (of course!); but they were still more than we're used to paying. So we made him promise he will take good care of them so we won't have to buy another pair in a couple of months!
I've already gotten a good report from Mitchell's teacher. We ran into her one day last week when Mitchell forgot his lunchbox. She told he she loves having him in her class. We had a brief scare on the first day of school when they pulled kids from all of the 2nd grade classes to create a new class. We were all relieved that Mitchell wasn't pulled from Ms. Stephan's class! I think we all would have been terribly disappointed. She told me that Mitchell was the only one in class who scored 100% on a math test she'd given to the class. She was very proud of him...as was I!
