I did take the day off and Dave and I spent the day together. It was perfect. My gift was an iPad 2. The kids enjoy it even more than I do! We went to lunch at my favorite restaurant...Village Tavern. It was a great way to welcome the big 4-0.
A couple of weeks later, on Wednesday, October 17th, I was walking across the parking lot at work and I tripped on a curb. I ended up breaking my left index finger. This was not a fun experience given that I was 37 weeks pregnant at the time. I fell during a company event that was taking place in the parking lot so it caused quite a commotion when the ambulance showed up to cart me off on a stretcher. I really wish I hadn't had such a big audience when I was being such a klutz!
One of my wonderful co-workers met me at the hospital and stayed with me until Dave got there. She even thought to bring my lunch to me and she got me a Diet Coke from the vending machine in the waiting room. I was on my way to get a Diet Coke for my lunch when I fell.
The ER staff was great and very quickly determined that it was a pretty bad break in my finger. As I expected given my experience with breaking my wrist in January 2011, they went a little overboard with the way that they wrapped up my hand.
How am I going to do my hair?
I was anxious to get in with the orthopedic doctor; however, I had to wait for authorization from worker's comp before I could do anything. So I didn't get to the doctor until Friday.
She said she would typically do surgery and pins with a break like mine; however, she didn't think it was a good idea given that I would be having a c-section in 2 weeks. Instead, she numbed my finger and then attempted to set it in a way that would hopefully heal as straight as possible. Luckily they put on a smaller splint that gave me a little more use of my hand. I did need help drying my hair. Dave would stand behind me on a stool and he held my hairdryer while I styled my hair. It actually worked out really well!
Much better!
I stayed out of work for 2 days and returned the following Monday. I think everyone was surprised to see me back at work! But the broken finger did pretty much push me over the edge and I was ready to be out of work. My last day in the office was Friday, October 26th.
Halloween was on Friday and my parents came into town so they could help with the kids while I was in the hospital. Macey didn't want to put on her costume, so she stayed home with me. Dave took Mitchell out trick or treating with his friends. They all happened to pick out the same costume. Mitchell is the one on the far right.
