Mitchell had his 3rd dentist appointment this morning. In preparation for it, I had been talking about going to the dentist for the past 2 weeks. I was trying to get him excited about it and not scared like he had been for the last 2 visits.
Every morning he would wake up and ask me if he was going to the dentist. So when Monday rolled around, I told him he would finally be going to the dentist! And he said he didn’t want to go.
Of course we went and he was timid and scared at first. He wanted me to go back with him, but the hygienist encouraged me to sit in a side room and let him sit in the chair by himself. So I sat and watched him. He did cry a little at first, but not so much that he wanted me to come and get him. One of he nurses brought him some Kleenex and helped him calm down. He laid back and started watching “Finding Nemo”. They let him pick out a toothbrush (Tow Mater from the Cars movie). He answered the hygienist's questions about whether he brushes his teeth and he told her about his new space man toothbrush that he got for Christmas.
He let her brush and floss his teeth and since that went so well, she decided to clean his teeth as well. So she showed him her “tickle toothbrush,” “silly straw” and “water gun”. Then she did a fluoride treatment (“teeth vitamins”) and he did great through everything! He didn’t move once and he didn’t cry and she was able to complete the entire cleaning. In the past, we had to pry his mouth open and all they were able to accomplish was a quick brushing. So this was a huge improvement over our previous visits! They even did an x-ray this time.
When the dentist sat down to look at his teeth, Mitchell gave him 5 and talked to him about the snow.
When we left I asked him if he had fun and he said, “No.” I asked him why and he said, “Because they don’t have a playground.”
