San Antonio, TX | Friday, October 8th

Mitchell’s favorite state is Texas. So Texas is on his list of places he wants to visit.

I’m not sure if this is because it’s a big state or he likes the shape or if he just thinks it would be a cool state to visit.

He got a book from the library about Texas and realized that there is a Six Flags in San Antonio and he decided he wanted to visit the “new Six Flags.”

San Antonio holds special memories for me since my family took a trip there with my grandparents in the late 80s. I remember River Walk and shopping at Banana Republic. I remember eating hotdogs with shredded cheese on them by the river. I remember eating a restaurant called The Magic Time Machine. It was a fun trip and San Antonio is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit again.

While I was on maternity leave, I called Dave and said, “We’re going to San Antonio. Let’s get this trip booked!” AirTran was having a good sale and we booked our tickets for Columbus Day weekend. It seemed so far off and with my maternity leave ending, the trip was always in the back of my mind. But before we knew it, the trip was just a few weeks away and we needed to put the final touches on our plans.

We had our hotel reservation, a loose itinerary, rental car secured and plane tickets. I researched restaurants and plugged addresses for the airport, hotel, etc. into my phone so I could use Google Maps to find stuff when we were driving around.

We flew out on Friday afternoon, October 8th. I picked Mitchell up from school early (I think he was just as excited about that as the trip!); we got Macey and then headed to pick Dave up from work. We got to the airport, parked and got everyone inside. We got to the gate about 1 ½ hrs before our flight. But it was fine…I would rather be running early!

Macey fell asleep in Dave’s arms before our flight even took off. She was really good on the flight. Mitchell loves to fly and is a very experienced flyer, so he was great as well.

We got into San Antonio around 4:30pm CST. We got on the shuttle and were taken to the rental car company. When we got off the shuttle, I said, “Let’s go find our car.” (Because I had bypassed check-in by providing all of Dave’s driver’s license information online and we could go straight to the lot to pick up our car.) A look of amazement passed over Mitchell’s face and he said, “How did our car get here?” Then we had to explain that we were “borrowing” a car while we were in Texas!

Unfortunately for us, we got into town during rush hour. We’ll definitely be better at planning next time! Mitchell was very anxious to get to the hotel and he did not like sitting in traffic at all. When you ask him about our trip and whether he had fun and if he liked Texas, he’ll say, “I didn’t like the Texas traffic.”

We finally got to our hotel and got checked in. We stayed at a Residence Inn. It was really nice to have a little kitchen and the extra space. They also had a great outdoor pool which was heated. We grabbed some dinner at Chick-fil-A and then went to Target. When we got back from our outing, Dave took Mitchell and Macey to the pool for a little bit while I got everything settled in our room.

Our plans for Saturday are to head downtown to River Walk!
