Mitchell's 5-year-old checkup was this morning at 9:30. After he ate breakfast, I told him he would need to take a shower. I told him I would take one first and then he would take one and we would head out for his appointment.

So I was in the bathroom getting ready and calling to Mitchell to come and get in the shower. He had been on our bed watching TV but all of the sudden he wasn't there anymore. I headed to the den. No Mitchell. I looked in the kitchen. No Mitchell. So I headed back down the hall and noticed that his bedroom door was shut. Then I saw this on the floor.

I picked it up and opened his door. And I was told that the note meant that I could not come into his room. What's next? Signs that say No Girls?!

His appointment went very well. When I was getting him checked in, he told me that he had to go potty. So I asked the receptionist if they needed a urine sample today. She wasn't sure but to give one just in case. So I told Mitchell he would need to pee in a cup. The expression on his face when he asked me "What??!" was priceless. The receptionist was cracking up. Then he got a little worried and said he didn't want to pee in a cup. But he did a good job. I'm thinking it's probably easier for parents to get a urine sample from a boy than it is with a girl!

He got weighed (49 lbs) and measured (44.75 inches/80% percentile) next. Then he had to do the vision and hearing test. I actually got a little worried about the vision test because they were using symbols (house, square, circle, apple) and when he got to the apple, I didn't know what it was!! Thankfully he immediately said apple. But it didn't look much like an apple to me! There was no stem. I thought it was a funny-shaped heart. But he did fine on the vision test. At least he doesn't have my eyes (yet).

Next was the hearing test. I was anxious for them to test his hearing because we got a letter from the school's Pre-K social worker saying that he had failed the hearing test at school. But again, he passed the test with flying colors. What a relief.

Then we saw Dr. Bowman. Mitchell told her about losing his 2 front teeth and Esther Jackson (his school). The appointment went really well until he found out about the....shots. Not only did he get 3 shots, but they also had to prick his finger to test his iron. He got a reprieve on the flu shot...he got the flu mist instead. When the nurse came in with the syringes he asked me who was getting the shots and we told him he was. He wasn't very happy about that. She pricked his finger first and then did the flu mist. He wouldn't lay completely back on the table while she did the shots in his leg. Instead, he wanted to watch. He's a lot braver than I am! I can never watch the needle.

When she stuck him the first time, he just said, "Ouch" and wasn't very happy with the nurse. But he never cried. Of course he hobbled around for most of the rest of the day. I think he milked that for all it was worth!

Later on, he told me that doctors are bad. I asked him why and he said: Because they give shots! I told him that the shots would keep him from getting sick. Luckily he won't need shots again until he's 10. I really, really hope that round doesn't include a tetanus shot!!

After the appointment, we headed to Great Clips to get him a haircut. I told him he pick anywhere he wanted for lunch. Lucky for me he picked Moe's.

Such was our official first day of his winter break. (Last week didn't count since he still went to Primrose.)
