Eating ice cream again

We took Mitchell to Bruster’s again a couple of weekends ago. Once again, we got him the baby cone with a small scoop of chocolate ice cream. And once again, he didn’t seem to realize he was carrying around a yummy treat! He would run and play while holding onto the cone with just one hand. He did sit down for a few minutes, but he didn’t really eat any of the ice cream. Getting into a chair the toddler way is quite interesting when you’re holding an ice cream cone! But he refuses to let go of it.

The ice cream finally did fall off the cone onto the ground. See the above picture. He bent down and tried to pick it up. At least he wasn’t picking it up to eat it. I think he was either going to throw it away or just put it back on the cone and continue playing. I got him to throw it away. But of course he was a sticky mess after that!

We were in Statesville last weekend to celebrate Grammy’s 85th birthday. On Friday night, we decided to go out for ice cream. Granddad ordered Mitchell a kid’s cone of chocolate ice cream. This cone was quite a bit bigger than the one we get from Bruster’s. But it didn’t stop him from running around with it just holding on with one hand. In order to show Mitchell how to eat his ice cream cone, Granddad kneeled down in front of Mitchell and started eating his ice cream. Because it looked like the right thing to do, Mitchell also kneeled down like Granddad was doing. However, I don’t think he ate any of his ice cream! He did take a couple of licks once he sat down in a chair. But sitting in a chair doesn’t last long at all. He was off and running again and he started climbing onto this bench that was built into the wall. Once again, he wouldn’t let go of his ice cream as he climbed up. Consequently, ice cream got on his cheek and in his hair. When he hopped down (with the cone in hand), Grandmother decided to see if she could show him how to eat ice cream. Just like Granddad, she kneeled down in front of Mitchell and started eating. So Mitchell did the same thing that he’d done before…he kneeled down as well. But he still wouldn’t eat the ice cream. This was a time that I really wish we’d had the video camera with us. Words just can’t describe how funny it was when he kept kneeling down when Grandmother and Granddad did.

We finally got him a spoon and he ate some that way. I shouldn’t complain about him not eating sweets. But it’s just so funny how he doesn’t seem to know that he has a yummy treat that he could be enjoying!
